Chan Master Ciyan Jingyuan of Huguo in Taizhou had the secular surname Zhang. He was a native of Yueqing in Wenzhou. When he first left home, he traveled extensively through the monasteries. Arriving at Jiangshan, he visited Chan Master Yuanwu and remained in his assembly for a long time. One day, because two monks were reading the Recorded Sayings of Sixin, which said: 'When deluded, one must wait for awakening; having awakened, one must recognize the delusion within awakening. When both delusion and awakening are forgotten, from the locus of delusion and awakening one establishes all dharmas,' the master mentally disagreed with it. Flicking his sleeves, he got up. Walking several paces, he suddenly had an implicit realization. He ran to report it to Yuanwu, and Yuanwu sealed his approval. Later, when taking leave of Yuanwu, Yuanwu asked: 'In the future, if someone asks you, how will you respond?' The master patted the back of a monk beside him and said: 'The Upādhyāya is asking you, why don't you answer?' Yuanwu laughed heartily and once said to others: 'I had a bit of Chan, but it was packed into a single cloth sack and carried away by Brother Yuan.' The monasteries therefore called him 'Yuan of the Cloth Sack.' The master's realization matched that of Longtu Geng, who accordingly invited him to enter the world [as abbot] at Nanming in Chuzhou. Instructing the assembly, he said: 'Śākya did not understand the Way; Bodhidharma did not understand Chan. The successive patriarchs have no active mechanisms; patch-robed monks have no handle. Be that as it may, how will you take it upon yourselves? If you can take it upon yourselves here, the Buddha Dharma and worldly dharma are fused into one, not shifting a hair's breadth throughout the twelve periods of the day. If not yet so, do not guard the cold cliff where unusual grass grows green; sitting in white clouds, the lineage is not wondrous.' He also instructed the assembly by raising his whisk, saying: 'Does the great assembly see? It smashes the silver mountains and iron walls, overturns the tiger's den and demon's palace, cuts off the mechanisms of the buddhas and patriarchs, and sweeps away the entanglement of words from all quarters. It makes Deshan step back and Linji swallow his voice; the patch-robed monks of the world dare not breathe. Even if Muzhou came through the gate in person, he would still get a thrust on the crown of his head. And tell me, where are the joints and corners that connect with the clouds? Do you know? When you go to various quarters, by all means avoid choosing wrongly!' He also said: 'The jackal yelps, the lion roars; opening the eyes, gaping the mouth. The Southern Star shifts, the Northern Dipper stumbles. Does the great assembly know where it lands? The vajra warrior crouches beneath the steps; the divine turtle walks into the fire.' A monk asked: 'What is the Linji lineage?' The master said: 'Killing a man without blinking an eye.' 'What is the Yunmen lineage?' The master said: 'Three eyes on the crown of the head illuminating heaven and earth.' 'What is the Weiyang lineage?' The master said: 'Push it, it does not go forward; pull it, it does not go backward.' 'What is the Fayan lineage?' The master said: 'Arrow points meeting face-to-face, showing no quarter.' 'What is the Caodong lineage?' The master said: 'Holding the night-illuminating talisman in hand, how many know the dawn has come?' The master resided at Nanming for nearly two years. Weary of welcoming and sending off, one day he cited the verse on Feeling Iron Face:
