28.22

南康軍雲居宗振首座。丹丘人也。依圓悟於雲居。一日仰瞻鐘閣倏然契證。有詰之者。座酬以三偈。其後曰。我有一機直下示伊。青天霹靂電捲星馳。德山臨濟棒喝徒施。不傳之妙於汝何虧。悟見大悅。竟以節操自高道望愈重。嘗書壁曰。住在千峯最上層。年將耳順任騰騰。免教名字挂人齒。甘作今朝百拙僧。

Head Monk Zongzhen of Yunju in Nankang Commandery was a man of Danqiu. He relied on Yuanwu at Yunju. One day, looking up at the bell pavilion, he suddenly had an accord and realization. When someone questioned him, the head monk responded with three gāthās. The last one said: 'I have a dynamic function to reveal directly to you: / A thunderbolt in a clear sky, lightning sweeping, shooting stars dashing. / Deshan and Linji's blows and shouts were applied in vain; / In the marvel that is not transmitted, what lack is there in you?' Yuanwu saw it and was greatly pleased. In the end, he held his integrity high, and his reputation for the Dao grew ever weightier. He once wrote on the wall: 'Residing on the highest tier among a thousand peaks, / Approaching sixty years of age, I let things drift along as they will. / Spared from having my name hang on people's lips, / I am content to be a monk of a hundred clumsy ways today.'
