Head Monk Daozu of Zhaojue in Chengdu Prefecture first met Yuanwu and attained realization under his words, 'Mind itself is Buddha.' Later, Yuanwu ordered him to share the seat. One day he entered the room for the sake of the assembly, where there were some twenty-odd people. The master suddenly asked, 'When birth and death arrive, how will you avoid them?' The monks had no answer. The master threw down his whisk and passed away quietly. The assembly were all startled and gazed in astonishment, promptly reporting it to Yuanwu. Yuanwu arrived, called out, and said, 'Head Monk Zu!' The master opened his eyes and looked at him. Yuanwu said, 'Rouse your spirits and break through the pass!' The master nodded and thereupon entered quiescence.
