Chan Master Nanfeng Yunbian of Pingjiang Prefecture was a native of this prefecture. He was ordained under Ruifeng Zhang of Min. Returning to his home region, he visited Qionglong Yuan. Suddenly having an insight, he communicated what he had seen. Yuan said, "Though you have gained entry, you have not yet reached what is right. You must apply the whip with urgency." Thereupon he took his leave to seek out various assemblies. Later, he called upon Yuanwu. Finding him holding interviews, no sooner had he crossed the threshold than Yuanwu said, "Look beneath your feet!" The Master struck the exposed pillar once. Yuanwu said, "Why not say a solid word?" The Master said, "If the Master shakes his head, the disciple wags his tail." Yuanwu said, "You, try wagging your tail and let me see." The Master turned a somersault and walked out. Yuanwu laughed heartily. From this he became famous. After assuming an abbacy, a monk asked, "What is taking away the person but not taking away the environment?" The Master said, "The Hegemon reaches the Wu River." The monk asked, "What is taking away the environment but not taking away the person?" The Master said, "Building an altar to appoint the general." The monk asked, "What is taking away both person and environment?" The Master said, "Ten thousand miles of mountains and rivers attain peace." The monk asked, "What is taking away neither person nor environment?" The Master said, "The dragon roars and mists rise; the tiger whistles and the wind is born." The monk asked, "Is there still anything beyond?" The Master said, "Missed right before your face." The monk said, "Truly an adept!" The Master said, "In broad daylight a ghost bewilders someone." One day, entering the city, he was walking with monks and laypeople into Shilang Lane. Someone asked, "The lane is here; where is the Tenth Son (Shilang)?" The Master flung his arms and said, "Follow me!"
