His Majesty said, "What about those who cultivate Chan stabilization?" The Master replied, "If beginners have something they practice, it is not called the great stabilization. The great stabilization is equal to empty space; there is entirely nowhere to practice, nor is there any arising, ceasing, entering, or exiting. Your Majesty, look at these practitioners of stabilization—they are all ordinary beings who have not realized the fruitions. Even if they cultivate up to the four dhyānas and eight concentrations, it is still not ultimate. Therefore, Chan Master Zongmi of Guifeng said, 'After the state of neither perception nor non-perception, one still returns to take the body of a civet.' In the past, there was a monk named Dingsanjiao who once composed a gāthā to instruct the assembly: / 'The four dhyānas abandon thoughts and are ever pure; / half is tathatā, half is emptiness. / In cultivating here, there are many fork-roads; / let practitioners who arrive here not be hasty.' / On the one hand, sudden realization makes one a Buddha in a single thought; on the other hand, differentiation causes one to fall into the two vehicles. Exhausting emptiness without returning for eighty-four thousand kalpas, after cultivation one re-enters saṃsāra. Therefore it is said: 'Ever abiding in the Nāga samādhi amidst bustling activity; the Nāga is ever in samādhi, there is no time when it is not in samādhi.' Even wind blowing, dust rising, clouds moving, and rain falling are all in samādhi. Fu Dashi said: / 'Wishing to learn the various samādhis, / that is movement, not Chan. / When the mind flows along with sensory objects, / how can it be called stabilization?' / This is indeed the unmoving true wisdom." His Majesty said, "Correct." The assembly all arose, gave thanks, and descended from the hall. The Master entered again and memorialized, saying, "On the second day of the eighth month of last year, the record of my dialogues with the throne, along with the gāthās of the seven Buddhas and the record of the Dharma master of Japan inquiring about the Way, were also submitted three days ago by request."
