隆興府谷山海禪師上堂。一舉不再說已落二三。相見不揚眉翻成造作。設使動弦別曲。告往知來。見鞭影便行。望剎竿回去。脚跟下好與三十棒。那堪更向這裏。撮摩石火收捉電光。工夫枉用渾閑事。笑倒西來碧眼胡。卓拄杖下座。

Chan Master Hai of Gushan in Longxing Prefecture ascended the hall and said, 'Mentioning once without speaking again already falls into secondary and tertiary steps. Meeting without raising eyebrows turns into contrivance instead. Even if you pluck the strings and distinguish the tune, report the past to know what is to come, run at the mere shadow of the whip, or turn back upon glimpsing the temple flagpole—under your heels you deserve thirty blows of the stick! How much less can one bear to pinch spark from flint here or seize flashes of lightning? Expending effort in vain is completely idle business; it makes the blue-eyed barbarian who came from the West double over with laughter!' Striking his staff, he descended the seat.
