Chan Master Daoyi of the Taizi Cloister in Fenzhou. A monk asked, "What is Buddha?" The Master said, "An old woman selling fans shielding the sun with her hand." A monk asked, "How is it before the red wheel has risen?" The Master said, "Illuminating clearly." The monk asked, "How is it after it has risen?" The Master said, "Groping at the sky and feeling along the ground." A monk asked, "What is the student's intimate place?" The Master said, "A loving mother holding an infant." The monk asked, "What is the student's place of turning the body?" The Master said, "At the street heads and alley ends." The monk asked, "What is the student's place of exerting effort?" The Master said, "A carrying pole of a thousand catties swaying at both ends." A monk asked, "When an ancient melody has no tone or rhyme, how can it be harmonized together?" The Master said, "Three times nine is twenty-seven; blowing the reed pipe at the edge of the fence." The monk said, "Gong, shang, jiao, and zhi are unrelated to the wondrous; the stone man claps his hands and laughs aloud." The Master said, "Only a fellow of the Way knows."
