Chan Master Puming Huilin of Daochang in Anji Prefecture was a native of Fuzhou. Ascending the hall, [he said], "The defiled bamboo colander, the undefiled wooden ladle; / The white peony in the courtyard, the red herbaceous peony by the balustrade. / Remembering the man who gazed at the wall for nine years, / In the end he did not recognize this one move. / And tell me: what is this one move?" Striking the meditation bench with his staff, he descended the seat. Ascending the hall, [he said], "One is many, many is one; / Atop Vairocana's crown, it is as bright as the sun. / There is neither one nor many; / The present gong'an has no deception. / Picking up the old felt clappers, / In times of brightness let us sing together the song of great peace."
