30.18

安吉州道場無傳居慧禪師。本郡吳氏子。上堂。鍾馗醉裏唱涼州。小妹門前秖點頭。巡海夜叉相見後。大家拍手上高樓。大眾若會得去。鎖却天下人舌頭。若會不得。將謂老僧別有奇特。上堂。百尺竿頭弄影戲。不唯瞞爾又瞞天。自笑平生岐路上。投老歸來沒一錢。上堂舉。臨濟示眾曰。一人在高高峯頂無出身之路。一人在十字街頭亦無向背。且道那箇在前那箇在後。師曰。更有一人。不在高高峯頂。亦不在十字街頭。臨濟老漢因甚不知。便下座。

Chan Master Wuchuan Juhui of Daochang in Anji Prefecture was a son of the Wu family in that same prefecture. Ascending the hall, [he said], "Zhong Kui sings Liangzhou while drunk; / The little sister before the gate only nods her head. / After the sea-patrolling yakṣa meets them, / Everyone claps their hands and climbs the high tower. / If the great assembly can understand this, / It locks the tongues of everyone under heaven. / If you cannot understand, / You will say this old monk possesses something extraordinary." Ascending the hall, [he said], "Performing a shadow play atop a hundred-foot pole, / Not only deceives you, but also deceives heaven. / Laughing at myself on the divergent paths of a lifetime, / Growing old and returning home without a single coin." Ascending the hall, he cited: "Linji instructed the assembly, saying: 'One person is atop the highest mountain peak, with no way to emerge. One person is at the crossroads, with neither face nor back. Tell me, which one is in front and which one is behind?'" The Master said, "There is yet another person who is neither atop the highest mountain peak nor at the crossroads. Why did the old fellow Linji not know?" Then he descended the seat.
