30.31

左丞范冲居士字致虛。由翰苑守豫章過圓通謁旻禪師。茶罷曰。某行將老矣。墮在金紫行中去。此事稍遠。通呼內翰。公應喏。通曰。何遠之有。公躍然曰。乞師再垂指誨。通曰。此去洪都有四程。公佇思。通曰。見即便見擬思即差。公乃豁然有省。

The Left Vice Director, Upāsaka Fan Chong, whose courtesy name was Zhixu, went from the Hanlin Academy to govern Yuzhang. Passing through Yuantong, he visited Chan Master Min. When tea was finished, he said, "I am growing old and have fallen into the ranks of the gold and purple robes. This matter has become somewhat distant." Yuantong called out, "Scholar!" The gentleman answered, "Yes?" Yuantong said, "What distance is there?" The gentleman leaped up and said, "I beg the Master to grant further instruction." Yuantong said, "From here to Hongdu is four stages' journey." The gentleman stood pondering. Yuantong said, "If you see it, you see it at once; intending to ponder, you err." The gentleman was thereupon thoroughly awakened.
