慶元府育王大圓遵璞禪師。福州人。幼同玉泉懿問道圓悟數載。後還里佐懿於莆中祥雲。紹興甲寅大慧居洋嶼。師往訊之。入室次慧問。三聖興化出不出為人不為人話。爾道這兩箇老漢還有出身處也無。師於慧膝上打一拳。慧曰。秖爾這一拳。為三聖出氣。為興化出氣。速道速道。師擬議。慧便打。復謂曰。爾第一不得忘了這一棒。後因慧室中問僧曰。德山見僧入門便棒。林際見僧入門便喝。雪峯見僧入門便道是甚麼。睦州見僧便道現成公案放爾三十棒。爾道這四箇老漢。還有為人處也無。僧曰有。慧曰劄。僧擬議。慧便喝。師聞遽領微旨。大慧欣然許之。

Chan Master Dayuan Zunpu of Yuwang in Qingyuan Prefecture was a native of Fuzhou. In his youth, together with Yi of Yuquan, he inquired about the Way under Yuanwu for several years. Later he returned to his home village and assisted Yi at Xiangyun in Puzhong. In the jia-yin year of the Shaoxing era, Dahui resided at Yangyu. The Master went to pay respects to him. When entering the abbot's room, Dahui asked: 'Regarding Sansheng and Xinghua going out or not going out, acting for others or not acting for others: tell me, do these two old fellows still have a way to emerge or not?' The Master struck a blow with his fist on Dahui's knee. Dahui said: 'With this single punch of yours, are you venting anger for Sansheng, or venting anger for Xinghua? Speak quickly, speak quickly!' The Master hesitated, and Dahui struck him, saying further: 'Above all, do not forget this blow of the stick!' Later, because Dahui asked a monk in the abbot's room: 'When Deshan saw a monk enter the gate, he immediately struck with the stick; when Linji saw a monk enter the gate, he immediately shouted; when Xuefeng saw a monk enter the gate, he immediately said, "What is it?"; when Muzhou saw a monk, he immediately said, "A ready-made gong'an; I release you from thirty blows." Tell me, do these four old fellows still have anything that acts for people or not?' The monk said: 'They do.' Dahui said: 'Ha!' The monk hesitated, and Dahui shouted. Hearing this, the Master immediately grasped the subtle purport. Dahui joyfully approved him.
