Chan Master Kumu Zuyuan of Nengren on Mount Yan in Wenzhou was a son of the Lin family in Qimin. At first he called upon Xuefeng Yu, and next he relied on Foxin Cai; with both, the dynamic matched. When he came to rely on Dahui at Yunmen Hermitage, while sitting at night, seeing a monk trim a lamp, he first thoroughly verified it. He had a verse that said:
“Trimming up the lamp, it is fire;
Beginningless ignorance is illuminated and broken through.
Returning to the hall, I bumped into the holy monk—
I almost missed him to his face!
If not missing him, what is it?
Fifteen years ago it was extraordinary;
Just as before, it is only this.”
Dahui presented him with a verse that said:
“At the crest of a ten-thousand-fathom cliff, he lets go of his body;
Standing back up, just as before, he is wide awake.
Eating when hungry, drinking when thirsty—completely without concern;
Why debate whether the past man is not the past man?”
In the spring of the yisi year of Shaoxing, he came forth to reside at Nengren. Ascending the hall, he said: “Where there is a Buddha, you must not stay; treading on a steelyard weight, it is hard as iron. Where there is no Buddha, run quickly past; beneath your feet the grass is three feet deep. Meeting someone three thousand miles away, you must not bring it up wrongly; the Northern Dipper hangs on Sumeru. If so, then do not go; on the tip of a staff carry the sun and moon. Pick willow blossoms! Pick willow blossoms! The pupils in your eyes are wearing embroidered shoes!” Striking with his staff, he stepped down from his seat.
Ascending the hall, he said: “Yan Mountain's withered-tree solid-headed Chan is not beside sharp and novel phrases. Suddenly touching it with a backhand, the great whale swallows the moon, waves surging to the heavens.”
