Chan Master Yi'an Shanzhi of Jiangshan in Jiankang Prefecture was a native of Yunmeng in De'an. At first he called upon Miaoxi at the foot of Huiyan Peak. One day, Xi asked him: “Elder, where are you from?”

The Master said: “A native of Anzhou.”

Xi said: “I have heard that you people of Anzhou are skilled at wrestling; is that so?”

The Master thereupon assumed a wrestling stance.

Xi said: “The people of Hunan eat fish; why are the people of Hubei choked by bones?”

The Master did a somersault and left.

Xi said: “Who knew that within cold ashes there was a bean that would burst?”

He came forth to reside at Baoning. Ascending the hall, he said: “The Buddhas never appeared in the world; everyone's nostrils reach to the heavens. The Patriarch never came from the West; each one stands like a wall a thousand fathoms high. Bowing respectfully to Śākya and not prostrating to Maitreya is naturally as it should be. Cutting off the road of the thousand sages and walking alone through the great chiliocosm's sandy realms is not out of bounds. If you understand at the place where the Buddhas appeared in the world, or take responsibility where the Patriarch came from the West, you will not save yourself and will suffer injustice for a whole lifetime. Is there any great person who undertakes the business of a great person? Come out and contend with Baoning! If not yet so, it is better to tear it to shreds.” He then stepped down from his seat.

One day, Regent Grand Councillor Chen Junqing gathered the various mountains for tea and conversation. He brought up the gong'an of “existence and non-existence are like a vine clinging to a tree” and had the monks of the various mountains critique it. All offered extraordinary words to flatter him. The Master said at the end: “Zhang Dayou, Li Dayou—do not strike the whole body, strike only the head.” Chen was greatly delighted.
