32.22

劍州萬壽自護禪師上堂。古者道。若人識得心大地無寸土。萬壽即不然。若人識得心未是究竟處。且那裏是究竟處。拈拄杖卓一下曰。甜瓜徹蒂甜。苦瓠連根苦。

Chan Master Zihu of Wanshou in Jianzhou ascended the hall and said: “The ancients said: ‘If someone recognizes the mind, on the great earth there is not an inch of soil.’ Wanshou is not so. If someone recognizes the mind, it is not yet the ultimate place. And where is the ultimate place?” Taking his staff, he struck it once and said: “The sweet melon is sweet right down to the stem; the bitter gourd is bitter right to the root.”
