Chan Master Shanneng of Zhongji in Fuchuan was a native of Yanling. He went back and forth between Longmen and Yunju for years without any realization. One day, during collective work selecting vegetables, Gao'an suddenly threw a cat into the master's arms. While the master hesitated, Gao'an kicked him in the chest, knocking him down. Thereupon the great matter became thoroughly clear. He ascended the hall: 'The eternal vast sky, a single morning's breeze and moon: one must not obscure the eternal vast sky on account of a single morning's breeze and moon, nor may one fail to understand a single morning's breeze and moon on account of the eternal vast sky. But what is a single morning's breeze and moon? Everyone fears the scorching heat; / I love the long summer days. / The warm breeze comes from the south, / Bringing a light cool to pavilions and towers. / Whether you understand or do not understand, take care never to accept it as your own!'
