Chan Master Tui'an Xiu of Jianfu in Raozhou ascended the hall: 'Does the wind move, or does the banner move? Does the wind ring, or do the bells ring? It is neither the wind and bells ringing nor the wind and banner moving. This land and the Western Heaven—a pack of pitch-black lacquer buckets! Deceiving and confusing the people of the world, soon they will extinguish the seed of the Barbarian! The mountain monk can do nothing about it, so I follow behind and join the commotion: / The gourd is crooked and bent; / The winter melon is straight and uncarved.' He ascended the hall: 'When entering the summer retreat, the left eye weighs half a catty; when dissolving the summer retreat, the right eye weighs eight ounces. Boasting of a ninety-day retreat, all one has gained is a bellyful of delusive thoughts! Even if you are pierced through in seven and eight directions, you will not escape the mountain monk's staff. Even so, a bow of a thousand jun is not triggered for a tiny field mouse.' He ascended the hall: 'My late teacher usually used a hammer-blow to the back of the head to knock away many twists and turns in students' chests. In those years, the rector Kebin was once poisoned by this from Xinghua; all too often the monastic groves throughout the world call it "surpassing the lineage with an extraordinary standard." This is not only letting down Xinghua, but also subjecting Kebin to humiliation. If one is an offspring of Linji, one will never cling to grass and attach to trees. Zifu is glad to see fellow practitioners; today I pour out my heart and empty my guts.' He struck his staff and said, 'Do you know where my late teacher landed? Dead-wood Chan fellows are as numerous as hemp and millet!' He ascended the hall: 'When speech arises without sound, what is that? In the face of form there are no things—do not make wild thrusts with needles and awls. Having leapt through the Dragon Gate of Yu, the wind and waves are even more perilous! Bah!'
