33.15

信州龜峯晦庵慧光禪師。建寧人。上堂。數日暑氣如焚。一箇渾身無處安著。思量得也是煩惱人。這箇未是煩惱。更有己躬下事不明便是煩惱。所以達磨大師煩惱。要為諸人吞却。又被咽喉小。要為諸人吐却。又被牙齒礙。取不得捨不得。煩惱九年。若不得二祖不惜性命。往往轉身無路煩惱教死。所謂祖禰不了殃及兒孫。後來蓮華峯庵主到這裏煩惱不肯住。南嶽思大到這裏煩惱不肯下山。更有臨濟德山。用盡自己查梨煩惱𭽽盂無柄。龜峯今日為他閑事長無明。為爾諸人從頭點破。卓拄杖一下曰。一人腦後露腮。一人當門無齒。更有數人鼻孔沒半邊不勞再勘。爾諸人休向這裏立地瞌睡。殊不知家中飯籮鍋子一時失却了也。爾若不信。但歸家撿點看。

Chan Master Hui'an Huiguang of Guifeng in Xinzhou was a native of Jianning. He ascended the hall: 'For days the summer heat has been like blazing fire; nowhere on one's entire body can one find rest. Thinking it over, this is also a person of vexation. But this is not yet vexation; if the matter under one's own feet is not clear, that is truly vexation. Therefore Master Bodhidharma was vexed: wanting to swallow it for all of you, his throat was too narrow; wanting to spit it out for all of you, his teeth were in the way. Unable to take it up and unable to cast it away, he was vexed for nine years. If he had not found the Second Patriarch who did not spare his life, Bodhidharma would often have had no way to turn his body and would have died of vexation! As the saying goes, "The ancestral grandfather does not finish it, and the disaster extends to the descendants." Later, the Hermit of Lianhua Peak came here and was so vexed he refused to stay; Master Siming of Nanyue came here and was so vexed he refused to descend the mountain. Furthermore, Linji and Deshan exhausted their own clever schemes, vexed that the oil ladle had no handle. Today Guifeng gives rise to ignorance over their idle matters, pointing it out from start to finish for all of you.' Striking his staff once, he said, 'One person has cheeks showing from behind the head; one person is missing teeth right in front. And there are several people who lack half a nostril—no need to examine them again. All of you must stop standing here dozing off, completely unaware that the rice basket and cooking pot in your house have been lost all at once! If you do not believe it, just return home and inspect them.'
