Chan Master Qie'an Shouren of Changlu in Zhenzhou was a native of Shangyu in Yue. Relying on Xuetang at Wuju, he heard a general discourse saying: 'When brethren nowadays apply their effort, it is just like practicing archery. First secure your feet, and later practice the method. Later, even though one has no deliberate intention, because of long practice, every arrow released will hit the mark.' Shouting once, he said, 'Right now the arrow is shot—look, look!' The master unconsciously fell back into a posture of dodging an arrow, and suddenly experienced a great awakening. He ascended the hall: 'The hundred thousand samādhis and immeasurable wondrous gates—today Qie'an does not begrudge his poor life, but will only make a single phrase to tell all of you.' Thereupon he struck his staff and stepped down from the seat. He once composed a verse on the story of the Old Woman of Taishan: / 'Opening a shop for lamp wicks and soapberries, / Daily seeking pints and gills to get through morning and night. / Just because the wind and rain have continued so long, / Capital and profit are completely gone, sadly leaning against the door.'
