Chan Master Zuzheng, "Old Monk" of Dahong in Suizhou, was a son of the Pan family of Tanzhou. Ascending the hall: '"Solitary and exposed amid the myriad forms." How do you explain the principle of being solitary and exposed?' He held up his whisk and said, 'Reaching the river, the land of Wu ends; / Beyond the bank, the Yue mountains abound.' / A monk asked, 'Yunmen asked a monk, "Luminous light serenely illuminates sands of rivers—is this not the phrase of Scholar Zhang Zhuo?" The monk said, "It is." Yunmen said, "Your words have fallen into error." I wonder where this monk's words fell into error?' The Master said, 'A catfish climbing a bamboo pole.' / A monk asked, 'Departing from words and phrases, please point directly, Master.' The Master raised his whisk. The monk said, 'Is there still a transcendent affair?' The Master said, 'There is.' The monk said, 'What is the transcendent affair?' The Master said, 'Quickly make three prostrations.'
