National Preceptor Tangong of Goryeo in his youth succeeded to the royal throne and revered the Chan lineage. When the sea merchant Fang Jingren arrived in Siming, he transcribed the sayings of Wushi and returned. The Master read them and was awakened; he immediately renounced the throne and shaved his head. He wrote a letter with the essentials of his words and verses on the four postures, sending Jingren to present them to Wushi. Wushi replied: “The Buddhas and Patriarchs appeared in the world without a single dharma to give to people; they truly enabled them to have self-confidence, self-awakening, self-realization, and self-attainment, possessing the great vision and knowledge—speaking as seen, and acting as spoken. The mountains, rivers, the great earth, grasses, trees, and forests have mutually witnessed this for a long time.” Later he again communicated his succession to the Dharma; his letter stated in brief: “In the ocean of birth and death for extensive kalpas, fully permeating through, I was able to meet a lineage master of true standing, who verified the Dharma with the seal of the three essentials; it is truly called a blind turtle meeting the hole in a floating log.”
