Chan Master Wuzhu Ben of Longhua in Lin'an Prefecture was a native of Guangde. Ascending the hall, he cited: “Great Master Yunmen held up a sesame cake and said: ‘I only make offerings to people of the two Zhe regions; I do not make offerings to people facing north.’ The assembly was silent. Yunmen spoke on their behalf: ‘The weather is cold and the days are short; two people share one bowl.’” The Master said: “The old fellow of Shaoyang had reverberation in his words, applying the awl to the painful spot. When examined, it turned out to be poison instead. Do you all want to understand? Half is south of the Yellow River, half is north of the Yellow River; a piece of frozen stillness, black as ink. Thinking about it in a cold place is truly distressing; unbearable is this old thief Yunmen! Thief, thief!” He stepped down from the seat and did not make the rounds of the hall.
