Chan Master Deyong of Shuanglin in Wuzhou was a native of the Dai family in the same commandery. He ascended the hall: 'Wielding the mallet and erecting the whisk—in the ancestral teachers' gate these are taking yellow leaves to stop a child's crying. Explaining the wondrous and discoursing on the abstruse—before patch-robed monks these are gazing at a plum grove to quench thirst. Today, Jishan will discard all the literary flourishes and will no longer point east and gesture west. Right into the life-vein of all Buddhas of the three times and the bone marrow of the six generations of ancestral teachers, I shall pour out everything without reserve and lay it bare for all of you.' After a long pause he said, 'Crying until blood flows is of no use; / Better to keep the mouth shut and let late spring pass.'
