34.13

溫州龍翔柏堂南雅禪師。上堂曰。瑞峯頂上棲鳳亭邊。一杯淡粥相依。百衲蒙頭打坐。二祖禮三拜依位而立。已是周遮。達磨老臊胡分盡髓皮。一場狼籍。其餘之輩何足道哉。柏堂恁麼道。還免諸力撿責也無。拍繩床云。洎合停囚長智。上堂曰。大機貴直截。大用貴頓發。縱有嚙鏃機。一鎚須打殺。何故我王庫內無如是刀。上堂。紫蕨伸拳笋破梢。楊花飛盡綠陰交。分明西祖單傳句。黃栗留鳴燕語巢。這裏見得諦信得及。若約諸方決定明窓下安排。龍翔門下直是一槌槌殺。何故不是與人難共住。大都緇素要分明。

Chan Master Baitang Nanya of Longxiang in Wenzhou ascended the hall and said: "On the summit of Ruifeng, beside the Roosting Phoenix Pavilion, a cup of thin gruel keeps us together, patched robes covering our heads as we sit in meditation. The Second Patriarch bowed three times and stood in his place—already this was complicated. That old bearded barbarian Bodhidharma divided up all his marrow and skin—a total mess. What need is there to speak of the rest? When Baitang speaks like this, does he avoid the criticism of all powers or not?" Striking the corded chair, he said: "Almost like prolonging imprisonment to cultivate wisdom." / He ascended the hall and said: "The great capacity values direct cutting off; the great function values sudden emergence. Even if there is an arrow-biting mechanism, a single hammer-blow must strike it dead. Why? 'In my king's treasury there is no such sword.'" / He ascended the hall: "Purple bracken extends its fist; bamboo shoots pierce their tips. Willow catkins have all flown away; green shade intertwines. Distinctly, the Western Patriarch's single transmission phrase: the golden oriole sings and swallows chirp in their nests. If you see clearly here and have reached authentic faith—if it were according to other quarters, they would definitely arrange it beneath the bright window; under Longxiang's gate, it is simply struck dead with a single hammer-blow. Why? It is not that it is hard to live together with others; in general, black and white must be distinct."
