34.15

南劍州劍門安分庵主。少與木庵同肄業。安國後依懶庵未有深證。辭謁徑山大慧。行次江干仰瞻宮闕。聞街司喝侍郎來。釋然大悟。作偈曰。幾年箇事挂胸懷。問盡諸方眼不開。肝膽此時俱裂破。一聲江上侍郎來。遂徑回西禪。懶庵迎之付以伽梨。自爾不規所寓。後庵居劍門。化被嶺表學者從之。所作偈頌走手而成。凡千餘首盛行於世。示眾。這一片田地。汝等諸人且道。天地未分已前在甚麼處。直下徹去已是鈍置。爾分上不少了也。更若擬議思量。何啻白雲萬里。驀拈拄杖打散大眾。示眾。上至諸佛下及眾生。性命總在山僧手裏。檢點將來有沒量罪過。還有檢點得出者麼。卓拄杖一下曰。冤有頭債有主。遂左右顧視曰。自出洞來無敵手。得饒人處且饒人。示眾。十五日已前天上有星皆拱北。十五日已後人間無水不朝東。已前已後總拈却。到處鄉談各不同。乃屈指曰一二三四五六七八九十十一十二十三十四。諸兄弟今日是幾。良久曰。本店買賣分文不賒。

Hermitage Master Anfen of Jianmen in Nanjian Prefecture studied together with Mu'an when young. Later, at Anguo, he relied on Lan'an, but had no deep realization. He took leave to visit Dahui at Mount Jing. Traveling along the riverbank, looking up at the palace gates, he heard the street patrol officer shout, 'The Vice Minister arrives!' He was released into great awakening. He composed a verse: 'For years this matter hung in my chest; / Questioning all quarters, my eyes would not open. / At this moment, liver and gall were ripped apart / By a single shout on the river: "The Vice Minister arrives!"' / Thereupon he went straight back to Xichan. Lan'an welcomed him and bestowed the saṅghāṭī robe upon him. From then on, he did not fix his dwelling. Later he resided in a hermitage at Jianmen. His teaching covered the Lingbiao region, and students followed him. The verses he composed flowed directly from his hand; over a thousand of them circulated widely in the world. / He instructed the assembly: "This piece of ground—tell me, all of you: before heaven and earth were divided, where was it? If you penetrate it directly, you have already blunted it; in your portion, there is nothing lacking. If you further deliberate and think, how is it merely ten thousand miles of white clouds?" He suddenly picked up his staff and dispersed the assembly. / He instructed the assembly: "From the Buddhas above down to sentient beings below, their lives are all in this mountain monk's hands. Upon inspection, there are immeasurable transgressions. Is there anyone who can inspect them?" He struck the staff once and said: "Every injustice has its perpetrator; every debt has its creditor." Then, glancing left and right, he said: "'Since leaving the cave, I have had no rival; / Where you can spare someone, just spare them.'" / He instructed the assembly: "Before the fifteenth day, all the stars in the sky bow to the north. After the fifteenth day, all the waters in the human world flow to the east. Before and after are both picked up and set aside: everywhere the local dialects are different." Then, bending his fingers, he said: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. Brethren, what date is it today?" After a good while, he said: "In this shop's trade, not a single coin is given on credit."
