Chan Master Dagui Yi'an Jian of Tanzhou was a native of Kuaiji. He ascended the hall: 'Leaves fall into a frosty sky, the weather is cold and the water chill. Old Shakya has nowhere to hide his body. Tearing down the eastern fence to patch the western wall, he runs into Bodhisattva Amoghadarśin asking for an instruction on the mindfulness-of-Buddha samādhi—most strange! Instead, one says to him: "Golden-colored clouds of radiant light! Retreat from the interview and go drink tea!"' Ascending the hall: 'The Old Barbarian opened a single path, exceedingly direct. He merely said, "Ceasing is bodhi; the pure, bright mind of nature is not obtained from others." Later people fail to enter its gate, perpetually running south and north, shuttling east and west, through year after year without a place to cease. Can you people cease? Stop, stop!' Ascending the hall, he cited: 'One day Master Huitang asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "Nanxiong Prefecture." Huitang said, "What did you come out for?" He said, "To seek out venerable elders." Huitang said, "It would be better to return home." The monk said, "I wonder what the Upādhyāya's meaning is in having me return home?" Huitang said, "In your home region, three coins buy a slice of preserved fish the size of a palm."' The master said: 'Better that one's body be crushed into fine dust than ever blind a monk's eye. Huitang fell somewhat short. There is a sort of fellow who would then say, "Familiar places are hard to forget"—what is there to discuss with them?' Ascending the hall, he cited the gong'an of the King of Jibin questioning Venerable Āryasiṃha about the emptiness of the aggregates. The master praised it in verse: 'How did the Venerable One ever attain the emptiness of the aggregates? / The King of Jibin merely severed the spring breeze in vain. / After the rain, the peach blossoms have already scattered, / Dyeing a whole stream of flowing water red.'
