35.19

天童枯禪自鏡禪師。福州高氏子。作上鐘偈曰。一模脫就轉風流。平地教他不肯休。要得洪音喧宇宙。直須更上一層樓。

Chan Master Kuchan Zijian of Tiantong was a son of the Gao family of Fuzhou. He composed a gāthā upon hanging a bell: 'Cast from a single mold, it becomes ever more refined; / Taught on level ground, it refuses to cease. / If you wish its magnificent sound to echo throughout the universe, / You must ascend yet one more story.'
