Chan Master Guangmu of Shaoshi on Mount Ruiyan ascended the hall and brought up the following: When a monk was standing in attendance on Caoshan Xia, Shan said, 'Practitioner, it is terribly hot.' The monk said, 'Yes.' Shan said, 'Just so; where will you avoid the heat?' The monk said, 'I will avoid it in the cauldron of boiling water and the furnace of burning coals.' Shan said, 'Just so; in the cauldron of boiling water and the furnace of burning coals, how will you avoid it?' The monk said, 'The multitude of sufferings cannot reach there.' The Master made a verse: 'Blinding the three eyes on the crown of the head, / One wanders at ease inside the boiling cauldron and furnace coals. / If you say that the multitude of sufferings cannot reach there, / In reality, where could such a place ever be?'
