36.24

溫州龍翔石岩禪師諱希璉。潮陽馬氏子。室中僧問。昔日佛照光禪師因宋孝宗宣問。釋迦佛入山六年所成何事。光曰。將謂陛下忘却。師答以頌曰。大根大器大熏修。瞥轉機輪向上頭。萬億斯年惟一佛。雪山元不隔龍樓。

Chan Master Shiyan Xilian of Longxiang in Wenzhou was a son of the Ma family of Chaoyang. In the abbot's room, a monk asked: 'In former days, Chan Master Fozhao Guang was questioned by Emperor Xiaozong of the Song: "Śākyamuni Buddha entered the mountains for six years; what did he accomplish?" Guang said, "I had thought Your Majesty had forgotten." [How do you respond?]' The Master answered with a verse: 'With great roots, great capacity, and great cultivation, / In a flash he turned the dynamic pivot upward. / For ten thousand times a hundred million years, there is only one Buddha; / The Snow Mountains originally were never separated from the Dragon Tower.'
