4.10

安吉州景清院居素禪師。僧問。即此見聞非見聞。為甚麼法身有三種病二種光。師曰。填凹就缺。問承和尚有言。寰中天子勅。塞外將軍令。如何是塞外將軍令。師曰揭。曰其中事如何。師曰蹴。曰莫便是和尚為人處也無。師彈指一下。問遠遠投師乞師一接。師曰。新羅人打鼓。曰如何領會。師曰。舶主未曾逢。問如何是末上一句。師曰。金剛樹下。曰如何是末後一句。師曰。拘尸城邊。曰向上更有事也無。師曰有。曰如何是向上事。師曰。波旬拊掌呵呵笑。迦葉擡頭不識人。

Chan Master Jusu of Jingqing Monastery in Anji Prefecture. A monk asked, "'This very seeing and hearing is not seeing and hearing'—why then does the Dharma-body have three kinds of illness and two kinds of light?" The Master said, "Filling in the hollows and accommodating the gaps." A monk asked, "I understand that the Upādhyāya has said: 'Within the realm, the Son of Heaven's decree; beyond the borders, the general's command.' What is the general's command beyond the borders?" The Master said, "Uncover!" The monk asked, "What is the matter within it?" The Master said, "Kick!" The monk asked, "Is that not precisely where the Upādhyāya instructs people?" The Master snapped his fingers once. A monk asked, "Having come from afar to take refuge in the Master, I beg the Master to receive me." The Master said, "A person from Silla beats the drum." The monk asked, "How should I understand this?" The Master said, "The shipmaster has never met [him]." A monk asked, "What is the first phrase?" The Master said, "Beneath the vajra tree." The monk asked, "What is the last phrase?" The Master said, "Beside the city of Kuśīnagara." The monk asked, "Is there still anything beyond?" The Master said, "There is." The monk asked, "What is the matter beyond?" The Master said, "Pāpīyas claps his hands with loud laughter; Kāśyapa raises his head and recognizes no one."
