4.14

駙馬都尉李遵勗居士汴州人。謁谷隱問出家事。隱以崔趙公問徑山公案答之。公於言下大悟。作偈曰。學道須是鐵漢。著手心頭便判。直趣無上菩提。一切是非莫管。公一日與堅上座送別。公問。近離上黨得屆中都方接麈譚。遽回虎錫指雲屏之翠嶠。訪雪嶺之清流。未審此處彼處的的事作麼生。座曰。利劍拂開天地靜。霜刀纔舉斗牛寒。公曰。恰值今日耳聵。座曰。一箭落雙鵰。公曰。上座為甚座著草鞋睡。座以衣袖一拂。公低頭曰。今日可謂降伏也。座曰。普化出僧堂。公臨終時膈胃躁熱。有尼道堅謂曰。眾生見劫盡。大火所燒時。都尉切宜照管主人公。公曰。大師與我煎一服藥來。堅無語。公曰。這師姑藥也不會煎得。公與慈明問答罷泊然而終。語見慈明傳中。

The Imperial Son-in-Law and Commandant-Escort, the upāsaka Li Zunxu, was a native of Bianzhou. He visited Guyin and asked about leaving the household. Guyin answered him with the gong'an of Lord Cui Zhaogong questioning Jingshan. Under these words, the Lord experienced great awakening. He composed a verse, saying: / 'To study the Way one must be an iron fellow; / Taking hold, the mind-ground is at once settled. / Head directly toward unexcelled bodhi; / Do not concern yourself with any right or wrong.' / One day, the Lord was seeing off Head Monk Jian. The Lord asked, 'Having recently left Shangdang and arrived at the Central Capital, we were just conversing with whisk in hand. Suddenly you turn your tiger-headed staff and point toward the azure crags of Cloud Screen, visiting the pure stream of Snow Peak. I wonder, what about the real matter here and there?' / The head monk said, 'The sharp sword sweeps open, and heaven and earth are serene; / The frosted blade is barely raised, and the Dipper and Ox constellations grow chill.' / The Lord said, 'It just so happens that today my ears are deaf.' / The head monk said, 'A single arrow fells a brace of eagles.' / The Lord said, 'Why does the head monk sleep wearing straw sandals?' / The head monk flicked his sleeve. The Lord bowed his head and said, 'Today may truly be called surrender.' / The head monk said, 'Puhua departs from the monks' hall.' / When the Lord was on the verge of death, his chest and stomach grew dry and feverish. There was a nun named Daojian who said to him, '"When sentient beings see the kalpa end / And it is burned by a great fire"—Commandant, you should take close care of your master.' / The Lord said, 'Great Master, decoct a dose of medicine and bring it to me.' / Jian was speechless. The Lord said, 'This nun does not even know how to decoct medicine!' / After the Lord finished his question-and-answer exchange with Ciming, he passed away peacefully. The words appear in the biography of Ciming.
