Duke of Ying, the upāsaka Xia Song, styled Ziqiao. From the time he accorded with the opportunity under Guyin, he daily associated with elderly patch-robed monks. It happened that Chan Master Pu of Shanglan arrived. The Duke asked, 'When the hundred bones collapse and scatter, which one is the Elder's own?' / Lan said, 'On the twentieth of last month, I left Qiyang.' / The Duke let it rest. / Lan then asked, 'When the hundred bones collapse and scatter, which one is Your Grace's own?' / The Duke thereupon shouted. / Lan said, 'The shout is not lacking; after all, which one is Your Grace's own?' / The Duke answered with a verse, saying: / 'Cease recognizing the prime function before the wind; / Where in the great void can thinking be placed? / If the mountain monk wishes news to be communicated, / It is when the moon rises with no clouds for ten thousand miles.' / Lan said, 'This too is merely toying with the soul.'
