Chan Master Zu'yin Xinglin of Luohan in Nankang Commandery. A monk asked, "Heaven rains down sweet dew, and the earth wells up the seven treasures—whose concern is this?" The Master said, "I thank you for reporting it." The monk said, "If so, then a son of the Buddha abiding in this place is precisely the Buddha's enjoyment." The Master said, "You must be more careful." When the Master ascended the hall and had just sat down, a cat suddenly jumped onto his body. The Master held it up to show the assembly and said: "In former days Nanquan personally cut it in two; / Today Yaśas shows it to the disciples of the mystery. / Now I sell it to all you Zen travelers: / The contract is clear—do you want it or not?" After a long pause, he threw down the cat and immediately stepped down from the seat.
