4.30

明州天童新禪師。僧問。如何是密作用。師曰。何曾密。問心徑未通時如何。師曰。甚麼物礙汝。問求之不得時如何。師曰。用求作麼。曰如何即是。師曰。何曾失却。問如何是天童境。師曰。雲無人種生何極。水有誰教去不回。

Chan Master Xin of Tiantong in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "What is the secret function?" The Master said, "When was it ever secret?" He asked, "What is it like when the pathway of the mind is not yet open?" The Master said, "What thing is obstructing you?" He asked, "What is it like when one seeks it but cannot attain it?" The Master said, "What is the use of seeking?" The monk said, "What is it then?" The Master said, "When was it ever lost?" He asked, "What is the environment of Tiantong?" The Master said, "No one plants the clouds, yet where does their arising end? / Who commanded the water to go, never to return?"
