Chan Master Dexing of Wanshou in Suzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "The great assembly looks up with reverence all at once." He asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's phrase for helping people?" The Master said, "For now, help yourself." He then said, "Question and answer are both complete; who among you catches the meaning? If you seek it from another, it becomes a needless detour instead. This old monk stayed in the deep mountains for a long time, originally intending to hide his clumsiness. Who would have thought that today I would enter beneath the gates of Wanshou? Truly it can be said that hiding it is impossible. Since it cannot be hidden, it is clearly exposed. I wonder who among you sees it first? If someone has a place of seeing, come forward before the assembly and utter a message." After a long pause, he said, "You have stood for a long time. Take care."
