4.36

越州雲門雍熙永禪師。僧問。師子未出窟時如何。師曰。且莫哮吼。曰出窟後如何。師曰。退後著。問如何是古佛徑路。師曰。誰不履踐。問如何是學人休心息意處。師曰。拗折住杖得也未。問心王出勅時如何。師曰。更宣一遍看。問如何是決定義。師曰。不可執著。問如何是佛法大意。師曰。此意不小。

Chan Master Yong of Yunmen Yongxi in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "What is it like before the lion has left its den?" The Master said, "For now, do not roar." The monk said, "What about after it has left the den?" The Master said, "Step backward!" He asked, "What is the direct pathway of the ancient Buddhas?" The Master said, "Who does not tread upon it?" He asked, "Where is the place where the student rests the mind and ceases deliberations?" The Master said, "Have you managed to snap your staff in two yet?" He asked, "What is it like when the mind-king issues a decree?" The Master said, "Proclaim it once more and let us see." He asked, "What is the definitive meaning?" The Master said, "You must not grasp onto it." He asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "This meaning is not small."
