Chan Master Shanshuang of Wanshan on Mount Lu. A monk asked: “What is the environment of Wanshan?” The Master said: “Beneath ten thousand cedar trees, a thousand fathoms of bamboo.” The monk said: “Who is the person within the environment?” The Master said: “This old monk clasps his hands facing the ācārya.” The monk asked: “Please instruct me on the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma.” The Master said: “The Kunlun [slave] wears the tip of Mount Hua on his head.” He then said:
“The ancient is the present; the present is the ancient. / Beneath the window of every household are all the patriarchs. / Mañjuśrī's manifestations fill the mountains and rivers, / Yet people of today simply cannot awaken to it.
Great assembly, tell me: to what do they awaken?” He gave a shout.
During the evening consultation, the attendant handed the whisk to the Master. The Master said: “In the past, Baizhang awakened because [the whisk] was held up; only then did he realize that steamed paste is made of flour. Chan practitioners, arriving here, do not deliberate: it is told that the monks' hall faces the kitchen storehouse.” He further said: “For sūtras there are sūtra masters; for śāstras there are śāstra masters; for the Vinaya there are Vinaya masters. What would you have this old monk say?” After a good while, he said: “Spring fatigue—return to the hall and sleep!”
