Chan Master Lingyun Baoyin of Mount Yunmen in Yuezhou ascended the hall: 'Last night clouds and rain scattered into the vast sky; / The moon is amidst the myriad phenomena. / The numinous light of the myriad phenomena has neither inside nor outside; / When this is understood, how does a single phrase penetrate?' Have you not seen? A monk asked Upādhyāya Dage, 'How is it when the moon rises from the clouds?' Dage said, 'Three children embrace flower drums; / Do not come to block my way to the ball goal.' 'The moon rises from the clouds'—what side of the matter does this clarify? 'Three children embrace flower drums'—if you try to think, you are separated from it. 'Do not come to block my way to the ball goal'—one must have a place to emerge before one gets it. If there is no place to emerge, one is like a black cow lying in stagnant water. How do you speak a phrase of emerging? Do not trouble yourselves to stand for long.
