復州乾明機聰禪師。僧問。如何是佛法大意。師曰。此問不虛。問如何是東禪境。師曰。定水不曾離舊岸。紅塵爭敢入波來。
Chan Master Jicong of Qianming in Fuzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?' The master said, 'This question is not in vain.' He asked, 'What is the environment of Dongchan?' The master said, 'The water of samādhi has never left its old bank; how could the red dust dare enter the waves?'
