Chan Master Xingzong of Chengxin in Yuezhou. A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The master said, 'The traveler keeps his mind on the road.' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' The master said, 'Tighten the straw sandals.' He ascended the hall: '"The Buddha-seed arises from conditions; therefore, the One Vehicle is preached." ' Raising his staff, he said, 'The staff is a condition; which one is the Buddha-seed? The staff is the Dharma of the One Vehicle; which one is the condition? Having met Old Man Śākya here, finish and buy straw sandals for itinerant pilgrimage. You must not pass by the gates of patch-robed monks; I will break your waist! And tell me, what does a patch-robed monk rely on?' After a long silence, he said, 'Thirty years from now, do not fail people.' He struck his staff and descended from the seat.
