6.18

泉州承天傳宗禪師。僧問。大用現前不存軌則時如何。師曰。承天今日高竪降旗。僧便喝。師曰。臨濟兒孫。僧又喝。師便打。問如何是般若體。師曰。雲籠碧嶠。曰如何是般若用。師曰。月在清池。

Chan Master Chuanzong of Chengtian in Quanzhou. A monk asked, 'How is it when great function manifests and no rules are retained?' The master said, 'Today Chengtian hoists high the flag of surrender.' The monk gave a shout. The master said, 'A descendant of Linji.' The monk shouted again. The master struck him. He asked, 'What is the essence of prajñā?' The master said, 'Clouds envelop the blue peak.' He asked, 'What is the function of prajñā?' The master said, 'The moon is in the clear pool.'
