The Compiler, Upāsaka Zeng Hui, shared quarters with Mingjue in his youth; upon coming of age, their paths diverged. During the Tianxi era, the gentleman was governor of Chizhou. One day, they met at Jingde Temple. The gentleman cited the Doctrine of the Mean and the Great Learning, matching them with the Śūraṅgama, to tally with the sayings of the ancestral school, and questioned Mingjue. Jue said, 'This does not even accord with the scriptural vehicles; how much less with the Doctrine of the Mean and the Great Learning? If the Academician wants to understand this matter directly and quickly...' He then snapped his fingers once and said, 'Just recognize it like this!' The gentleman grasped the purport at his words. In the early Tiansheng era, the gentleman was governor of Siming, and sent a letter and gifts to invite the master to fill the vacancy at Xuedou. Once he arrived, the gentleman said, 'I recently discussed with Elder Qing the story of Zhaozhou seeing through the old woman; I wonder whether there was truly a place where she was seen through or not.' Jue said, 'What did Elder Qing say?' The gentleman said, 'He went off like that again.' Jue said, 'Elder Qing let a move slip by. Does the Academician know that patch-robed monks throughout the world cannot escape this old woman's snare?' The gentleman said, 'There is something else to be said here: if Zhaozhou had not seen through her, he would have suffered injustice for his whole life.' Jue said, 'He has seen through her!' The gentleman laughed heartily.
