Chan Master Liuhe Xiangji Zi of Zhenzhou. A monk asked, "The pressing of the four mountains is not asked about; what about when the gate of the six directions opens?" The Master said, "Thoroughly open in all directions." The monk said, "Then wondrous function is unhindered." The Master said, "A three-legged toad jumps up into heaven." He asked, "What is a monk who sits in meditation?" The Master said, "Utterly incapable in myriad affairs." The monk said, "What is a monk who enters samādhi?" The Master said, "The four seas are fundamentally clear and still." The monk said, "What is a monk who practices the Dao?" The Master said, "Surging vigor in the six directions." The monk said, "What is a monk who responds to offerings?" The Master said, "The three wheels are equally empty of intrinsic nature." The Master ascended the hall and said, "The path of bodhi cannot be calculated or measured. The myriad phenomena are fundamentally empty—how could there be true or false? Taking non-action as the core, taking signlessness as the root. Its measure envelops worlds as numerous as sand grains; its virtue accords with heaven and earth. Sometimes expounding the One Vehicle, sometimes providing the three phrases; sometimes causing one to awaken to the origin, entirely causing them to return to the source. In ultimate truth, there is certainly no such matter. If you realize the fundamental mind, the mind is clear and distinct; the mountains, rivers, and the great earth are also completely at leisure." He also said, "The fundamentally existent mind is not separated by a hair's breadth. Due to stray thoughts, one consequently falls into wrongdoing and error. When defilements are exhausted and one encounters someone, one then clarifies one's own vision. What is one's own vision?" After a long pause, he said, "The vast waves of the four seas are still; / A single round [moon], heaven and earth in autumn."
