6.29

溫州平陽寶慶子環禪師。僧問。大施門開請師一決。師曰。風行草偃。僧云。一句截流又作麼生。師曰。水到渠成。僧云。華蓋山上雲。慎江江裏水。師曰。郎中在此。問古鏡未磨時如何。師曰。清風來不盡。僧云。磨後如何。師曰。明月照重城。僧云。太守臨筵請師一照。師曰。是何面目。僧云。三十年後。師曰。賺殺人。拈拄杖曰。朝到西天暮歸東土。即且致。把斷要津一句作麼生道。若也道得。不出門知天下事。若道不得。拄杖子笑爾。擊禪床一下。

Chan Master Pingyang Baoqing Zihuan of Wenzhou. A monk asked, "The gate of great giving is open; please, Master, resolve it at once." The Master said, "The wind blows and the grass bends." The monk said, "What about the phrase that cuts off the flow?" The Master said, "When the water arrives, the channel is formed." The monk said, "Clouds upon Huagai Mountain; water in the Shen River." The Master said, "The Vice Director is present here." He asked, "What is it like when the ancient mirror is not yet polished?" The Master said, "The pure breeze comes endlessly." The monk said, "What about after it is polished?" The Master said, "The bright moon illuminates the layered city." The monk said, "The Prefect approaches the banquet; please, Master, shine on him once." The Master said, "What face is this?" The monk said, "Thirty years later." The Master said, "Misleading people to death!" Holding up his staff, he said, "Reaching the Western Heaven in the morning and returning to the Eastern Land in the evening—set that aside for a moment. How do you say the phrase that blocks the essential crossing? If you can say it, without stepping out the door you know the world's affairs. If you cannot say it, the staff will laugh at you." He struck the meditation couch once.
