6.36

鼎州乾明知應禪師。僧問。蓮花未出水時如何。師曰。撐天拄地。出水後如何。師曰。填溝塞壑。乃曰。馬祖陞堂百丈卷席。火動煙生雲擎雨色。覿面相呈一何輕擲。重賞三千輕酬八百。

Chan Master Qianming Zhiying of Dingzhou. A monk asked, "What is it like when the lotus flower has not yet emerged from the water?" The Master said, "Propping up heaven and supporting earth." "What about after emerging from the water?" The Master said, "Filling gullies and choking ravines." He then said, "Mazu ascends the hall; Baizhang rolls up the mat. / Fire stirs and smoke arises; clouds hold the color of rain. / Facing each other face-to-face, how lightly it was tossed away! / A heavy reward of three thousand, a light recompense of eight hundred."
