Head Monk Yuanyi of Yunfeng on the Southern Peak. Upāsaka Li Linzong asked, "My intention is to leave the defilements, yet now I have not left them. Please, Master, resolve my doubt today." The Master said, "What is leaving the defilements?" The upāsaka was bewildered. The Master said, "Do you understand?" The upāsaka suddenly had an awakening and composed a verse: 'The mind's mirror has always been luminous; / The vast river is fundamentally deep. / Only after the Master's question / Did sand and stones turn into gold.' The Master said, "Directly heading for hell." The upāsaka said, "Self and other are signless; why speak of hell?" The Master said, "Where are you right now?" The upāsaka said, "Right now, responding and answering." The Master said, "Just this is yellow gold."
