Chan Master Zhiqian of Mount Langya in Chuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Langya?" The Master said, "Pines grow desolate and old because they are finite; flowers bloom one after another because they are without emotion." [The monk] said, "Who is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Hair long, the monk's appearance is ugly." [A monk] asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's phrase for instructing people?" The Master said, "Three feet of snow before the eyes." [The monk] said, "Isn't that just it?" The Master said, "A branch of flowers behind the brain."
