7.28

泉州涼峯洞淵禪師。僧問。如何是涅槃。師曰。刀斫斧劈。曰如何是解脫。師曰。衫長袴短。問諸聖不到處師還知也無。師曰。老來無力下禪床。問離四句絕百非時如何。師曰。柴門草自深。問狗子還有佛性也無。師曰。松直棘曲。問如何是佛。師曰。金沙照影。曰如何是道。師曰。玉女拋梭。曰佛與道相去幾何。師曰。龜毛長一丈兔角長八尺。

Chan Master Dongyuan of Liangfeng in Quanzhou. A monk asked, "What is nirvāṇa?" The Master said, "Cut by a knife, split by an axe." [The monk] said, "What is liberation?" The Master said, "The robe is long, the trousers are short." [A monk] asked, "Do you know the place where none of the sages reach?" The Master said, "In old age, I lack the strength to step down from the Chan bed." [A monk] asked, "How is it when one departs from the four propositions and cuts off the hundred negations?" The Master said, "At the brushwood gate, the grass grows thick on its own." [A monk] asked, "Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?" The Master said, "Pines are straight, brambles are crooked." [A monk] asked, "What is Buddha?" The Master said, "Golden sand reflecting shadows." [The monk] said, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "The jade maiden tosses the shuttle." [The monk] said, "How far apart are the Buddha and the Way?" The Master said, "Turtle hair is one zhang long; rabbit horns are eight chi long."
