Chan Master Zihong of Ruiyan in Taizhou was a native of the same prefecture, born to the Wu family. A monk asked, "What is the Dao?" The Master said, "Opening the eyes, gazing without seeing." A monk asked, "As things are by nature, not so—how to point the way?" The Master said, "Your words have fallen into error." The monk said, "I beg the Master for instruction." The Master laughed heartily: "Ha, ha!" Ascending the hall, he said: "Not guarding the one, not heading toward the two; above, below, and the four directions have no equal measure. Sailing an iron boat in the great ocean; churning whale-sized waves atop Mount Sumeru. Linji retracts his tongue; Deshan shelves his staff. Throughout thousand-fold and myriad-fold kalpas, standing solitary and majestic, left behind as a model for the human world."
