Chan Master Zhīqiān of Qīxián on Mount Lú was a son of the Gāo family from Hángzhōu. A monk asked, "Asking questions and giving answers are all within the courtyard of establishing teachings. May I ask whether there is an affair beyond or not?"
The Master said, "There is."
[The monk] asked, "What is the affair beyond?"
The Master said, "Clouds follow the dragon; winds follow the tiger."
[The monk] said, "If so, then when the dragon gains water, its spirit swells; when the tiger encounters the mountain, its fierce awe grows."
The Master said, "What about raising clouds and bringing rain?"
The monk then gave a shout.
The Master said, "Is there anything more?"
The monk hesitated.
The Master scolded him, "You recite words from a made-up lineage!"
[A monk] asked, "What is the original mind?"
The Master said, "Dismantling the eastern fence to mend the western wall."
[The monk] said, "If so, then today's midday meal is late."
The Master said, "Step back!"
Ascending the hall, [the Master said], "Hearing the two words 'Buddha-Dharma' has already defiled my ears and eyes. Before you people have crossed the threshold of the Dharma hall, it would be well to give you thirty blows of the stick on the soles of your feet. Even though it is so, today the mountain monk has also exhausted his strength for the assembly. Take care!"
Ascending the hall, [the Master said], "What thing is it that can be so stubborn, deceitful, and blinking?" Clapping his hands and laughing heartily, he said, "Today's handle is such that even if the yellow-faced Gautama's whole body were a mouth, he could not explain it away either. Standing so long!"
