8.14

越州淨眾梵言首座。示眾。南陽國師道。說法有所得斯則野干鳴。說法無所得是名師子吼。師曰。國師恁麼。道大似掩耳偷鈴。何故說有說無盡是野干鳴。諸人要識師子吼麼。咄。

Head Monk Fànyán of Jìngzhòng in Yuèzhōu instructed the assembly, "National Teacher Nányáng said: 'Preaching the Dharma with attainment—this is the howling of a jackal; preaching the Dharma without attainment—this is called the lion's roar.'"
The Master said, "The National Teacher's speaking like this is much like covering one's ears to steal a bell. Why? Speaking of existence and speaking of non-existence are entirely the howling of jackals. Do you all want to recognize the lion's roar? Scat!"
